As Iowa's one-time Capital City, Iowa City is a beloved town for many Iowas. Those local to Iowa City appreciate the town's nod to historic roots which are visible throughout the city, most evidently in the downtown district. The city has also embraced its notoriety as one of Iowa's biggest, if not thee biggest, sporting town. That may be controversial to say, especially to a Cyclone fan, but not controversial is naming Iowa City an exciting and buzzing town to explore, shop and dine. It's a town like no other, so if visiting the area, don't rush through, stop and stay awhile! You'll need some time anyway after trying a variety of the city's most delicious restaurants. And, as good Hawkeyes do, our Iowa City agents shared their favorite, most frequented cafes, restaurants, and diners.

Breakfast

For those who need a pep in their step no matter the day or time, Java House gives you the option to pick up or order a bag of coffee and brew a cup o' joe at home. Java House Coffee Roasters has ground and whole beans for sale but also serves local businesses with their wholesale options. Java House coffers full-service coffee solutions for offices, healthcare facilities, restaurants, etc, since 1994. The wonderful thing about eating at a creperie is whether you are a sweet, savory, or both kind of person, you have all the options available to you! Crêpes de Luxe Café doesn't disappoint in providing many types of crepes that give you the "true taste of authentic French cuisine." Cortado Coffee and Cafe is a European-style espresso bar that specializes in high-quality drinks and drips coffee. Don't forget to order a delicious pastry with your order. If grabbing a mid-afternoon coffee, Cortado also has Mediterranean-inspired sandwiches, salads, and soups.

Fine & Casual Dining

If you love a good soup and sandwich, Nodo is a must-stop. There are endless sandwich choices to try so matter what you're craving,  you're sure to find a Nodo sandwich that will satisfy your appetitive. A restaurant that includes a good Poutine, is a good restaurant in our opinion. Quinton's Bar & Deli has a large menu, with delicious apps to start, like the Poutine! Described as 'upscale diner food,' Midtown Family Restaurant is an Iowa City original with hundreds of great reviews, and a cupcake flavor of the week! Monica's was voted 'Best Overall Restaurant' for five consecutive years and has a very loyal fan base as many Iowa Agents recommended this eatery. Loved for their long menu and many options, patrons keep coming back to try something new and equally as delicious. Mosley's Barbeque and Provisions is where you go for patio dining! Come for the BBQ but stay for the full bar and rotating beers on "one of the best patios in town!" Orchard Green Restaurant is Iowa City's premier fine dining experience with gourmet classics and innovative American-Mediterranean Cuisine sure to make a lasting impression on its diners. The Iowa River Power Restaurant does indeed have a history that involves an old power plant. This turn-of-the-century power plant, which also features beautiful views of the Iowa River, was renovated to become a place that could "provide the backdrop for a unique dining experience." Tribute Eatery & Bar is known and loved for its shareable snacks and "downright delicious cocktails, wines, and beers." Trumpet Blossom Café may be just one of the most creative restaurants in Iowa City. With suitable dishes that include no animal products and "as many local ingredients as possible" dine at Trumpet Blossom if you want to try food that you truly can't get anywhere else. Pullman Bar & Diner

Italian/Pizzeria

When in the mood for a cheesy, gooey pizza, give Mesa Pizza a try. With traditional and fun toppings to choose from, there is always a pizza order for your craving. Zio Johno's originally opened in Cedar Rapids in 1984 and opened more locations since in the Iowa City region. Known to serve "Pasta with a smile," we're not sure if that means the service or the food will leave you smiling, but either way you'll be happy! Wig & Pen Pizza has been described as the best pizza in the entire state, one this is for sure, it's definitely the most unique pizza restaurant in the state! Inspired by a London CLub of the same name, Wig and Pen is where you go when you have delicious pizza with an aesthetic you can't find anywhere else. Try The Union Jack for a full English experience. Outside the Iowa City limits in neighboring Kalona is Tuscan Moon Grill on Fifth, a one-of-a-kind dining experience that keeps people coming back from miles and miles around. Tuscan Moon Grill is located in what was once the Kalona Hotel and was renovated to at first be a home decor and wine garden. And slowly evolved into the Tuscan Moon Grill due to the owner's passion to own and operate a dining establishment that highlights her strong Italian heritage.

Brew Pub

Shakespeares Pub & Grill has been a local neighborhood bar since 1970. In 1999 the pub because known as Shakespears Pub & Grille and is open to the public every day, 365 days a year! Offering "upscale bar food" in a fun, family-friendly environment, Shakespeare's is a great place to go for breakfast, lunch, or dinner or just for drinks in the beer garden! Big Grove offers award-winning craft beer and thoughtfully prepared food that can be enjoyed indoors or out on an expansive outdoor dining patio that includes a grassy area ready for picnics and games! 2 Dogs Pub  St. Burch Tavern prides itself on honoring its longstanding kinship with the town and the University of Iowa. It's apparent the moment you step into the tavern they know to stand apart but in a way that feels nostalgic. St. Burch Tavern gets its name from Burch the Bear Iowa's original mascot. Reds Alehouse Walk through our doors and you won't find a mass-produced domestic beer on tap. Micky's Irish Pub Tavern Blue is an establishment inspired by water and living a life with strong beach vibes.
