East Moline History

East Moline began as a planned community created by the East Moline Company, which sought to sell land and establish a new town along the Mississippi River. The town was officially platted in 1895, and the company held a land auction hoping to attract new residents and businesses. However, the initial sale was slow—only five of the nearly 2,000 available lots were purchased—delaying early development.

Growth finally began to take shape at the turn of the 20th century when Deere & Company opened a factory in East Moline in 1900. Soon after, additional industries moved into the area, including the Union Malleable Iron Company, which helped spur economic expansion and population growth. East Moline was officially incorporated as a village in 1903 and later became a city in 1907 as its industrial base continued to expand.

East Moline also holds a unique place in dessert history. In 1946, local inventor Henry C. Duke and his son Gene created the world’s first pressurized soft-serve ice cream freezer. Their invention was built for the rapidly growing Dairy Queen franchise and helped revolutionize the way soft-serve ice cream was produced and served. This innovation became an important part of the company’s success and remains an interesting piece of East Moline’s entrepreneurial history.

The Mississippi River also provides many opportunities for boating, fishing, and sightseeing from several public access points throughout the region.

Outdoor enthusiasts can also take advantage of the extensive Quad Cities bike path system, which winds through multiple communities and even crosses the Mississippi River into Iowa.
